Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets @ David Zwirner – London
06/04/2013 @ 8:00 am - 11/04/2013 @ 5:00 pm
freeCanadian artist and ultra prolific drawer Marcel Dzama is about to get his first expo of the year in London while many of his other works are currently being exhibited around the world in cities like Stockholm, Dusseldorf or Massachusetts.
Central London gallery David Zwirner will be opening next Saturday an exhibition of recent and new work by Marcel: Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets, which features three videos inspired by the game of chess, as well as puppets and masks based on the characters, drawings, collages, dioramas, and sculptural works.
Working across media Marcel Dzama brings a fanciful world to life in his work. Dzama draws upon the imagery of royal courts, parades, European nationalism, secret bureaucratic meetings, and silent films to create works that are as sinister as they are whimsical.
In Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets, Marcel will be exhibiting “Death Disco Dance”, a four-minute video loop featuring characters based on chess pieces; “Sister Squares”, which premieres in the exhibition taking its title after artist and chess player Marcel Duchamp’s handbook Opposition and Sister Squares Are Reconcile as well as a mask sculptures & drawings which emphasize the underlying tension between reality and fiction.
