PHotoEspaña 2012 @ Various – Madrid

06/06/2012 @ 8:00 am - 22/07/2012 @ 5:00 pm

Photo is…. something hard to define. That’s why maybe the organisation launched a couple of months ago a social media campaign asking for people to define this art… anxiety, emotion, sensation, adventure… more than 300 ways to define this year’s edition.

Getting old huh? 2012 may already be the 15th edition of the PHE festival but it’s packed with so many exhibitions, events and parallel activities that we doubt anyone could be able to fully enjoy the program even if you decided to spend the whole summer in Madrid.

As each year some of the most prestigious photography will invade a long list of museums centres and art galleries…  despite the budget-cut and the very harsh economic situation in Spain.  300 artists, including Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Carlos Garaicoa, Paz Errázuriz, Santiago Sierra, Chen Chieh-jen, Alberto García-Alix and Helena Almeida…. workshops by PHotoEspaña and Magnum Photos teams, guided tours, family workshops, on-line competitions… woufff.

First things first…

The essential part of the festival is composed of 70 exhibitions, and this year Official Section of the Festival will focus broadly on the theme “From here”. Exhibitions that include group and solo shows by artists for whom context is a major factor in the creation of work with an international impact.

Then you’ll find OpenPhoto & Festival Off which will include exhibitions organised by foreign embassies and cultural institutes and occupying 38 galleries and venues that go from the traditional FNAC Callao to the also very central Istituto Europeo di Design.

Those 2 months when Madrid becomes the photography capital of the world are about to start… and we wouldn’t miss them… not even for the London olympics (thank god they’re not happening at the same time). More info on their webpage.
