Pina Bausch died a couple of years ago, one of the most influential choreographers in the development of the Tanztheater style of dance. As a tribute and as a present to the rest of living mortals Wim Wenders’ Pina was released last month in a few European countries as well as in China & Hong Kong.
Joining the trend of modern choreography movies evolving from the popular Tanztheater (which keep proving their success given the flexibility and endless possibilities cinema brings to the stage) we’ve seen before with 40m under, and now, as a tribute to Pina’s creative power.
After seeing Pina Bausch’s “Café Müller” in 1985 Wm Wenders fell deeply in love with the Tanztheater Wuppertal in Venice. A friendship was born at that time, and also a project, to make a movie… that was constantly postponed given the limits of the cinema at that time. Eventually the film project became a recurrent joke between Wim & Pina. In 2008, one year before Pina’s death they finally started working together, and Pina chose her pieces .. «Café Müller », « Le sacre du printemps », « Vollmond » and « Kontakthof» for her 2009/2010 season while the film was produced.
Now it’s finally alive (let’s forget about the 3D aspect even if Wim claims that it was “the only way to express Pina’s spatial works”).
