Open City – London

25/12/2010 - 05/02/2011

Hey hey! One last contest and one last opportunity to demonstrate your talent before 2010 ends?

A 4-day new festival from the hands of  Michael Stewart, Andrew Steggall, Olivia Bellas & Jessie Teggin who have quite a few ambitions from the start although not that much budget. An International Documentary Film Festival that won’t take place until next summer but they’re already open for submissions… from both established and emerging talent.

The doc Film Festival will be obviously all about documentaries because these are “about turning over the stones of our society. Through documentary we learn about each other: about our differences and about our similarities. Documentaries tell our stories, directly and with dramatic vividness. They engender emotional and intellectual understanding in a world that grows ever more complex yet more connected”.

Cristi Puiu's (Chair of the jury) latest documentary

From exposing corrupt government practices (we’ll get a Wikeleaks documentary….. it’s only a matter of time) to showcasing eccentric individuals, documentary is about turning over the stones of society. Through documentary we learn about each other, our differences and our similarities. They tell our stories and help us understand a world that grows ever more complex as it grows ever more connected.

One of those documentaries we’re eagerly awaiting is Away From the Keyboard, which we supported several months ago and Simon Klose is currently finishing. In any case you know what these type of festivals bring you (if you win), a generous cash prize and something to put on your CV.

Plus  your work will be seen by Oscar and BAFTA award winning judges. So far the known names are….

Cristi Puiu – Chair of the jury
Director of The Death of Mr Lazarescu,
awarded the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005

Pawel Pawlikowski – BAFTA winning director
BAFTA winning director of The Last Resort and My Summer of Love

Simon Chinn – Oscar winning producer
Oscar winning producer of Man on Wire

Penny Woolcock – Acclaimed British filmmaker
Director of 1Day, The Death of Klinghoffer and On The Streets

And even though the festival wont run until 16th – 19th July, 2011 (UCL venues in Tavistock Place and the Renoir Cinema) you only have until February 5th to submit your documentary (you’ll have to pay a fee though….)!!! . There’s not much more info regarding the prizes (3 for now, Jury Prize, emerging director & film about London) or the submission conditions but we’ll have more details over the coming weeks for more info. If not you can start digging on their website.
