‘The Story is Not the Story’

Re-purposing the flag: Ben Buswell’s The Story is Not the Story opens at Upfor, Oct 18 – Dec 2

18 October 2017

Ben Buswell is presenting solo exhibition The Story is Not the Story at Portland’s Upfor Gallery opening October 18 and running to December 2.

The Portland-based artist will give a talk on November 4 at 4pm to discuss his new series of glass and photo based sculptures which have been made using scratching and melting techniques to explore the material quality of process.

Zoning in on micro images of the naturally occurring volcanic glass Obsidian which were taken at Orgeon’s Newberry National Volcanic Monument, the photographs go through a number of processes to become sculptural and something new, for example he “carefully pressed a flag of the United States into a bed of white frit (silica granules), then heat fused the frit, resulting in a crystalline debossment.”
