Clubdead.net launch, Apr 15

15 April 2016

The Clubdead.net exhibition, curated by Faron Ray and Alice Khalilova is launching online on April 15.

The theme of the show comes in a short text describing the commercial clutter of everyday life, but optimised. It reads like a desktop of Photoshopped image searches materialised in branded fantasy objects, like gold WKD alcopops and “fluorescent yellow V20 filled with the iridescent bodies of a dozen blue bottle flies”. Or perhaps its a metaphor for the promise of a future perpetually unrealised: “Holed up in an abandoned night club, fifteen survivors listen to salvaged EDM club mixes through a failing sound system.”

The artists set to feature include the above-mentioned organisers, as well as Iain Ball, Yorkson, Dorota Gaweda and Egle Kulbokaite, Hannah Le Feuvre, and Natasha Lall among others, some of whom took part in independent, artist-run publication Low Impact: ‘Shallow Waters’ last year.

The online presentation is managed by Robin Buckley in charge of sound, and Calum Gunn doing web development, while other the artists involved are Finnian McKenna, Cedric Ng, Valinia Svoronou, Owen ThackerayBora Akinciturk, and Petr Davydtchenko.

Natasha Lall @ Life Gallery, March 17

14 March 2016

Natasha Lall will screen three videos at London’s Life Gallery in a one night show called Scrub on March 17.

“A scrub is a now generalized term used as a synonym for a ‘noob’ or ‘newb’, which is someone who is bad at a video game or activity in general”, reads the accompanying text.

The text, which is from a 2008 definition of the word ‘scrub’ in Urban Dictionary by a user called Chirus_Fire, then discusses how the term used to refer to a person who deliberately and persistently makes mistakes in a video game by mashing their hand over the control pad with loose grip like when you hold a sponge to wash a car with.

How does a term lose itself like that? What is a ‘scrub’ now, in 2016? What is the power and effect of deliberate intention and persistence in de-skilling?

Scrub will be the first solo presentation for the artist whose work nestles in and across contexts of feminist cinema, gaming, anime, app making, sped-up mixed tapes, cyborgs and irlfieldrecording.tumblr.com.

Wet Protest @ Gaybar, Aug 28

28 August 2015

@Gaybar continues its activist party streak with a new event called Wet Protest at Penarth Centre in London tonight, August 28.

Created by artists Hannah Quinlan Anderson and Rosie Hastings, the party series has always combined LGBTQ activism with sweaty good times, and tonight’s no different. “The GAY LIBERATION FRONT became the GAY ACTIVIST ALLIANCE,” writes the event press release, which “became the Stonewall Movie but the G always stood for G-A-Y always stood for WHITE CIS GAY MAN and for transphobic lesbians who clock misogyny but not transmisogyny and racist radical queers”.

Kicking off with a reading performance by Collyn Filani, the night will also feature tunes by DJ Kerrigan aka Natasha Lall, Summer Faggot Deathwish aka Sam Cottington, and Tschan aka Tschan Andrews.
