M.I.A. drops ‘Unbreak My Mixtape’

21 August 2013

As the mother of all that is good in contemporary underground rap, we have a soft spot for original blipster M.I.A.. Despite the “radical chic” accusations and the incident with the swearing and the Superbowl (actually, because of them), M.I.A. wins full respect for remaining resolutely herself, while being emulated the world over.

Hence, our excitement every time she releases just a hint of her forever forthcoming new album Mathangi, now set for a release November 5 on Interscope, especially since the song and video for ‘Bring the Noize‘ (particularly the gold edition) were so good. This short number Unbreak My Mixtape strikes an uncharacteristically sombre note, featuring tear jerkers from Karen Dalton and Blur, as M.I.A. consoles us with “while I get my life sorted, here’s a mixtape”. Thank you. **

M.I.A. drops new song

18 June 2013

As the god mother of blipster chic, M.I.A. has been dragging out the release of her long-awaited Matangi and after her mix for Kenzo it was sounding like maybe she’ll be easing back on the “techno buzz fuck” of her sound, but not so. ‘Bring the Noize’ is as glitch-y and fragmented as ever, while the flashing gif background of her website, a spinning 3D globe with the words of the song-title rushing around it, comes as an apt expression of both her sound and the world at large. You will never sleep again. **

M.I.A. mix for Kenzo.

As that elusive fourth album from the UK-born rabble-rouser lingers on in obscurity (the latest release date for Matangi is set for April 15) M.I.A., aka Mathangi Arulpragasam, has dropped  a mix for fashion label KENZO‘s Paris Show. At eight minutes long, it features the controversial singer’s eclectic taste for South Asian sounds, as well as some original material and a production polish that was lacking in her Diplo days, evidently found post-Madonna.

M.I.A.’s is a welcome addition to the label’s run of interesting sounds from the underground, with equally globally-minded Nguzunguzu contributing a mix for their Fall/Winter show last year. Funnily enough, the LA electronic duo have also worked with Arulpragasam in the past, producing her 2011 Vicki Leekx mix tape, while female half Asma Maroof did a stint as the rising agit-pop stars touring DJ. See the dazzling artwork and hear the new mix here.**
