Allison Katz @ fig-2, Nov 23 – 29

23 November 2015

ICA Studio‘s fig-2 opens a new exhibition by Allison Katz, running at the London space from November 23 to 29.

The show features a new set of paintings commissioned by fig-2 and engages with both the parameters of the fig-2 studio and Katz’s recent installation in Freiburg.

In specific, Katz will show two paintings scaled to monolithic sizes that make them appear as though they’re floating, each displaying a mirrored interior “where the memory of a lived experience is doubled in its image as a painting”.

Kihlberg & Henry @ fig-2/ICA Studio, Oct 26 – Nov 1

26 October 2015

Karin Kihlberg and Reuben Henry’s new commission This Building, This Breath opens at fig-2 at the ICA Studio on October 26, running from 6pm to 8pm.

The new exhibition is a “hypnotic foray into presentness and the passing of time“, building on the duo’s long-term investigation into “the disembodied voice”, playing with filmic voiceovers to create what they call “the possibility of pushing the art experience into situations of liveness”.

Kihlberg and Henry use sound and moving image as two distinct entities, separating the sources only to rejoin them in a new way. The speaker, hidden behind a screen, voices content that “coincides with the choreography of project images” and repeatedly references various cultural understandings of breathing, while the projected film is compiled from found footage of exerpts from advertorials and other films. The result is a “drive towards an abstract proposition that the room itself is breathing”.

Oreet Ashery @ fig-2, Aug 10

10 August 2015

Oreet Ashery launches her latest exhibition at fig-2 at the ICA Studio with performances by Anoxide and New Noveta on August 10.

Creating a two-stage exhibition, Ashery has invited the respective Death Metal band and performance duo to realise a “colliding performance” to take place on opening night, followed by an installation by the Israeli artist “instigating the embedded condition of death in the everyday and highlighting its presence”.

Ashery will transform the space into an all-white environment exhibiting two bronze busts by modernist sculptor Dora Gordine, a photograph of Amy Winehouse and producer Mark Ronson, and an excerpt from Alfred Hitchcock Presents. The installation exists as a kind of preparation and two-day casting session for the Spring 2016 launch of Ashery’s project, Revisiting Genesis—a web series looking at the “processes of dying, digital afterlife and legacy, outsider communities, friendships and reincarnations of women artists”.

Broomberg & Chanarin @ fig-2 / ICA Studio, Aug 3 – 9

3 August 2015

Broomberg & Chanarin are giving a private view of their latest exhibition at fig-2 at the ICA Studio tonight from 6pm to 8pm.

Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin’s site-specific work for fig-2 takes the landscape that surrounds the ICA Studio, an area characterised by daily displays of state power, as its starting point, incorporating the Mall, Downing Street, Horse Guards Parade and Buckingham Palace, into the work itself.

By transforming the fig-2 premises into a ‘green screen’ studio for a bouffon or ‘Dark Clown’ to inhabit—a figure that was generally relegated to the margins of society apart from one day of the year, when he or she was invited to the Royal Court with explicit permission to ridicule the authorities. Live performances by Hannah Ringham playing the bouffon will take place on the opening night and the following Thursday evening, and the performance will be accompanied by a raucous soundtrack, composed by drummer Kid Millions.
