Brussels-based curatorial collective Komplot presents 5EVER Summer, a series of five different events at five different locations spanning Belgium, France, and Greece throughout September and October.

Concerned with nomadic creative practice, the collective begins their programme at their home location in Belgium, presenting new work from Paris-based duo Fenêtreproject (Dustin Cauchi and Francesca Mangion). The exhibition is entitled Dreamworks and is curated by Paris-based gallery La Plage. It opens September 3 and runs through October 15.

On September 8 two two-person exhibitions will open in Brussels, GEOLOGOS and Sick. GEOLOGOS is “not an exhibition that takes place at Komplot, nor will it be a group show at http://geologos.space“. Artist duo Blunt x Skensved (Grégoire Blunt and Emmy Skensved) produce web-based projects and digital animation. Berlin-based artists Antoine Renard and Clémence de La Tour du Pin produce sculptures and installations for the second exhibition, Sick. They present a dense sculptural environment that investigates “the relationships between technological emancipation, entertainment and decay within the context of late capitalism”.

Komplot will participate in the Artists Books & Independent Publishers Fair at BRASS in Belgium on September 9. The event is curated by Jap and Komplot and includes a “DJ Set of Fat Chance” in the evening.

Alex Morrison presents Furniture Collectibles at Paris’ La Plage on September 15 running through October 15. Morrison’s art “engages a pre-modern architecture and design history – moments from Art Deco, utopian architecture, and interior design all inform his work”. He presents installations and objects and is interested in “the constant recycling of aesthetic codes”.

Group show Extend & Pretend opens on September 24 at Enterprise Projects in Athens, Greece. It features work from Laurie Charles, Patrice Gaillard & Claude, Filip Gilissen, Guillaume Ginet, Seyran Kirmizitoprak, Cleo Totti, Benny Van Den Meulengracht-Vranckx, and Elise Van Mourik. The exhibition title references the “patronising, glib slogan applied by English speakers to Greece’s financial policy of accepting heavy loans from other EU countries”. The exhibition intends to “forge links from real things in real space – a conversation of objects in a room and a conversation between space and artists in Brussels and Athens”.

Peeping Tom’s Digest: the Paris issue launch @ Shanaynay, Jun 2

The fourth issue of Peeping Tom’s Digest: Paris, is launching at project space Shanaynay on June 2.

The publication explores different art scenes around the world and is described as “experimental, empirical and subjective”. For every issue it takes a different city and houses text- and image-based contributions from both local and visiting participants. Previous editions have been on Berlin in 2009, Mexico City in 2011, and Beirut in 2013.

The Paris issue according to the press release “teases out an offbeat and distanced portrait of the Parisian and French scene, through the restitution of work groups (dinners, performances, round table) and contributions from 70 participants for whom a certain detachment was chosen or imposed: foreigners living in Paris or in residency, French people based abroad, nomads and dromomaniacs passing through, etc.”

Linked, and contributing to this particular scene and its write up are Eleanor Ivory Weber, Exo Exo founders Elisa Rigoulet and Antoine Donzeaud, Fenêtreproject, Gallerie Chantel Crousel, Mouhamed Bourouissa, Maxime Bichon who has worked with Paul Maheke, and curatorial duo Francesco Urbano Ragazzi.

Fenêtre Project + Pakui Hardware @ Exo, Dec 10 – 18

Fenêtre Project and Pakui Hardware are presenting a collaborative exhibition, Dawning, at Paris’s Exo, opening December 10 and running to December 18.

Following a text devoted to the neglected bacteria that “made us”, the press release for the show describes the human body as a map of a metropolis, where these micro-organisms become “citified, recycling all”, including these corpses of “once-living giant evolutionary offspring”.

The Paris-based Fenêtre Project is an artist and curatorial duo featuring Dustin Cauchi and Francesca Mangion, who recently presented we wanted to be better and ended up being happy group exhibition with the likes of Tilman Hornig, Pierre Clément and Felicia Atkinson. Pakui Hardware, meanwhile, is a collaboration between Lithuanian artists Neringa Černiauskaitė and Ugnius Gelguda who’s Lost Heritage was on at Riga’s kim? Contemporary Art Centre from January to February this year.

Wir Kinder aus Asbest @ La Cité internationale des Arts, Jul 10

La Cité internationale des Arts opens a new group exhibition titled Wir Kinder Aus Asbest, launching at their Paris location on July 10.

The title, which translates to We are children of asbestos—asbestos being the highly heat-resistant fibrous mineral often woven into fabrics to insulate and make them fire-resistant—alludes to the exhibition’s thematics, which confront asbestos as a “symbol for a total melt-down of a modern technology”.

With works by Rudolf Reiber, Fenêtre Project (featuring Francesca Mangion and Dustin Cauchi), Pierre Clemént, Rémy Briere, and Ulrike Buck, the exhibition reflects on the previous century’s history, from the atomic disaster of Chernobyl to the fall of the iron curtain, and the “present and dystopian visions of the future”.

Fenêtre Project (2015) exhibition photos

we wanted to be better and ended up being happy, the name of a Fenêtre project-curated show that opened at Galerie Joseph Tang on March 27 (exhibition photos, top right), is now making its online migration in collaboration with OFluxo Blog. It is also a paradoxical statement that could drive you into an existential scream if you let it. Aren’t better people happier? Or is that ignorant people? Are they happier because they forgot it all? Are we sadder because we keep remembering?

The title, their press release writes, is an offhand statement in reply to the “promise of futurity in mainstream sci-fi culture in the 1980s and 1990s”. The future, they say, is a thing of the past; in contemporary culture, “presence has substituted promise, favouring a view of the future as an abridged temporal phenomenon”. We no longer have even nostalgia to cling to.

The group show, which features Felicia Atkinson, Dustin Cauchi, Pierre Clément, and Tilman Hornig, ran at Galerie Joseph Tang for one weekend in late March as part of the ongoing Fenêtre Project in collaboration with the Paris gallery, and is launching at its digital home for an online exhibition. The “curatorial / editorial / convening / creative practice”, developed by Mangion and Cauchi, deals with the dialectics of online/offline and the ways in which the two are converging in the contemporary art field.

Examining curation as an active, dynamic practice, they set up a landscape or “micro ecosystem” of signs and signals composed in hand-engraved text on various objects, like routers, silent speakers, laser pointers, and organic matter. “In this landscape,” they write, “the works co-habit the space harmoniously. This landscape however, harbours a system of signification that is not always visible, at times manifesting a disruption that destabilises this found harmony.” **

The Fenêtre Project group exhibition was on at Paris’ Galerie Joseph Tang, opening March 27. Their SANKAINET solo show is on at Cyprus’ Ground, running May 16 – 17.
