home school Field Day connects art + education for an afternoon at MoMA PS1’s Sunday Sessions, Feb 4

3 February 2018

The home school Field Day programme is on at New York’s MoMA PS1 on February 4.

The pop-up art school, facilitated by Victoria Anne Reis and manuel arturo abreu, based in Portland, Oregon, will present a multimedia curriculum of talks, exhibitions, poetry, physical education, and more, in order to create “welcoming contexts for critical engagement with contemporary art.” Applying the concept of a school field trip to the programme, the event references the MoMA PS1 building’s history as a neighborhood public school, offering opportunities “to question and reimagine the methods, purposes, and dynamics that connect art and education.”

The day, running from 2pm to 6pm, will include a radio show broadcast by Diamond Stingily via Know Wave, a screening of audiovisual work created by and for the African diaspora, an artist talk by The Black School, as well as performances by RAFiA, Abdu Ali, and Fuck U Pay Us, among other things.

Organised by poet, visual artist and Performance Poetry co-founder John Giorno, along with Mark Beasley, the event explores a contemporary generation’s use of the internet and social media, mirrored by Giorno’s poetic use of technology.

Also taking part are Harry Burke, Todd Colby, Andrew Durbin, Ben Fama, Sophia le Fraga, Fanny Howe, Paolo Javier, Tan Lin, Morgan Parker, and Bunny Rogers, who all examine how  the internet is recalibrating digital spaces/languages and somehow express that “text and the staging of language is no longer a form fixed by the printed page.”

GCC @ MoMa PS1, Mar 23 – May 25

21 March 2014

Gulf art collective GCC is presenting the fifth installment of a series of group exhibitions, this one called Achievements in Retrospective at New York’s MoMA PS1, opening March 23 and running May 25.

Having already hit London and Berlin, with Achievements in Swiss Summit and Ceremonial Achievements, the work of the nine-strong group of artists from across the Gulf have been parodying the farce of global politics-as-PR campaign by mimicking and exposing the aimless bureaucracy of the international summit.

The accompanying blurb on the MoMA website is the first to refer to the group’s conceptual core in a press release, referencing the “ministerial language and celebratory rituals” of the global conference that so often alludes to nothing much at all.

GCC features Gulf artists based across the Middle East, US, UK and South East Asia, including Nanu Al-Hamad, Abdullah Al-Mutairi, Aziz Al Qatami, Barrak Alzaid and Amal Khalaf, as well as Fatima and Monira Al Qadiri, Sophia Al Maria and Khalid Al Gharaballi.

K-HOLE + Janus @ TIME ZONE, Feb 23

23 February 2014

NYC trend forecasters K-HOLE are putting on a party with Berlin club night Janus, after their TIME ZONE Sunday Session at MoMA PS1, February 23.

The events will run from the afternoon into the night and should be good in light of the fact that K-HOLE know all there is to know about “mass indie” and the economy of difference, as outlined in their brilliant and darkly funny “post-aspirational” article ‘YOUTH MODE: A REPORT ON FREEDOM’.

For TIME ZONE they’ll be releasing “ideas related to insomnia and nightlife”, supplemented by more ‘nightlife’ from the  Kablam, M.E.S.H and Lotic-representing Janus, inspired by “the weather, discomfort, Total Freedom, agoraphobia & amateurism”.

‘Image Employment’ @ MoMA PS1, Sep 5 – Oct 7

10 September 2013

More corporately-driven conundrums from co-curators Andrew Norman Wilson and Aily Nash who follow up to their recent Dream Factory with Image Employment, now running at MoMA PS1, from September 5 to October 7.

Featuring works by artists exploring labour, consumption and what propels them, works like Kevin Jerome Everson‘s ‘Quality Control’ observes the unremitting workload of workers in an Alabama dry-cleaning factory in real time, as well as a typically paradoxical commercial collusion by DIS with its ‘Watermarked I Kenzo Fall 2012’ commission for said fashion label’s menswear collection.
