Beatriz Olabarrieta

Alice Theobald + Beatriz Olabarrieta @ Primary, Aug 6

4 August 2016

Alice Theobald and Beatriz Olabarrieta are holding a screening at Nottingham’s Primary artist-led space on August 6.

The screening by the London-based artists will consist of “mixing artist films, snippets of TV, interjections from YouTube, and conversations exploring domesticity, conventionalism, aspiration and the absurdity of performance of the everyday”. Theobald will explore different characters and voices using 3D video and incorporate footage of local toddlers and dogs. While Olabarrieta will test ideas around how video can take a role within live performance.

The screening is part of Primary’s Back-to-front-space programme, a series of short residencies that “encourage artists to experiment with different ways of working –either testing out a speculative idea, or developing new collaborations”. Participants are to produce and present work to an audience in any format.

Matt Copson, Melanie Jackson, and Andy Holden are also currently in-residence and have events forthcoming in late August.

See the Primary website for more details.**

MONO5 @ Courtyard Theatre, Feb 3

2 February 2016

MONO5 is taking place at London’s Courtyard Theatre on the evening of February 3.

MONO is an artist initiative dedicated to moving image and hosting screenings set up by Rafal Zajko. For the upcoming event, and mono’s fifth, Zajko has invited 16 artists including Sophie Hoyle, Owen Thackeray, Zehra Arslan, Beatriz Olabarrieta and Shana Moulton.

MONO5 hopes to showcase the breadth of work made and approaches sought in the moving image field. Each work is always less than five minutes long, producing, perhaps, a coherent but scattered effect.

See the FB event page for more details**

Beatriz Olabarrieta @ NGCA, Jun 4 – Jul 11

4 June 2015

Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland, England is celebrating Spanish artist Beatriz Olabarrieta with a solo exhibition of her work, titled Plot Bunny and running from June 4 to July 11.

Plot Bunny will be Olabarrieta’s first institutional solo show in the UK, for which the Bilbao-born and London-based artist will present a series of site-specific sculptures that will function as catalysts for a series of texts commissioned throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Exploring the parameters of language and how it exists “both inside and around objects”, the sculptures will operate as furniture or as platforms upon which the writers are tasked as performers, shifting the material aspects of the gallery’s architecture. The preview on June 4 brings a live performance of a collaborative sound work with Rhodri Davies and Shelly Knotts.

See the exhibition page for details. **

Beatriz Olabarrieta, Diagonal Z Jeans (2014) exhibition photos + video

7 October 2014

It’s in establishing a tension of opposing forces that the dynamism of Beatriz Olabarrieta‘s work lies. Moving across video, ceramics and textiles, the London-based artist’s Diagonal Z Jeans exhibition, presented at Mexico’s Parallel Oaxaca, in collaboration with a residency at Museo Experimental el Eco, takes its title from a denim trouser and details the elements that make them such a good fit.

In rejecting stasis in favour of what she calls “doozy decentering and a wish for a body that could expand as gum and get lost into wild spirals of form”, extra-long and rolled-up jeans legs lie flaccid on the floor, a plastic bag weighted with spray-painted raw clay in the shape of frijoles (Mexican beans) is suspended from the curved metallic stand propping up a flatscreen slung with rope. As the hanger moves the ‘beans’ scatter through a hole around the gallery, crackling when you step on them, while the video shows a hand holding a felt tip pen as it competes with the movement of a page that mimics the motion of its ‘Pulling Parallel Turning Diagonal’ (2014) title. Its writing is rendered as illegible as the “mis-communications and material observations” that the exhibition press release notes as Olabarrieta’s preoccupation with “the complexities of written or verbal (in)articulation”.

These are complexities the artist also explored during a recent residency at London’s Cell Project Space, culminating in a three-day interactive event Shifty Show (A performance with five voice overs) accompanied by Ellen Mara De Wachter‘s text ‘Shifting thoughts on stringy forms‘. In it the writer and curator questions the value of ‘doing’ in favour of a sort of ‘undoing’, which in Diagonal Z Jeans, Olabarrieta takes further by emptying these actions and objects of their function and developing a new “sculptural semi-abstract language” from all the confusion.**
