Babyfather @ Bloc., Apr 7

4 April 2016

Babyfather and ‘special guests’ are performing at London’s Bloc. Autumn Street on April 7.

London-based artist, producer and Hype Williams co-founder Dean Blunt is a known member of the project, which released its debut BBF Hosted by DJ Escrow on Hyperdub on April 2.

The record, which features contributions from Arca and Micachu (aka Mica Levi), is a pastiche of tracks of murky grime and hip hop influenced electronic numbers with titles like ‘Greezebloc’, ‘Esco Freestyle’ and ‘Killuminati’ and a looping vocal sample that declares, “This makes me proud to be British”.

See the Bloc. website for (limited) details.**

Björk @ Citadel Music Festival, Aug 2

27 July 2015

Björk is playing the Citadel Music Festival in Berlin this week, taking the stage of August 2.

Playing songs from her latest album, Vulnicura, which deals with her separation from husband Matthew Barney, the performance will be classic Björk: melancholy and supernatural in turns, with otherworldly instruments, psycho-poppy visuals, and a general air of alien and distressed beauty.

Opening for Björk will be the Venezuelan producer and DJ Alejandro Ghersi, better known by his stage name Arca, and Houston-born producer J’Kerian Morgan, better known as Lotic.

See the event page for details. **

Arca – ‘Thievery’

11 September 2014

Producer Arca has announced his album debut, Xen, to be released on Mute on November 4, with a new track ‘Thievery’.

As producer to a handful of FKA Twigs‘ pre-LP 1 songs and sharing collaborations with artist Jesse Kanda, releasing three EPs on UNO NYC, consulting on production for Kanye West’s Yeezus album  and selling out the vinyl release of his &&&&& mixtape, it’s about time the Venezuelan DJ produced a full-length.

Along with upcoming US show dates, plus UK and European tour announcements to come, the first track lifted from the upcoming LP, ‘Thievery’, features the idiosyncratic sideways sway and abnormal thrust of his album-less though still impressive oeuvre to date.

Listen to ‘Thievery’ and see full track-listing below. **

1. Now You Know

Evian Christ – ‘Salt Carousel’ + Trance Party, Nov 22

21 November 2013

So from early UK grime, through Fade to Mind and back again, the gun-related sounds, as illustrated in a recent Electronic Beats article, surface in this fractured stream of scrambled, sped up vocals and a gun being cocked (but in this case actually shot), in Tri Angle producer Evian Christ‘s first single ‘Salt Carousel’, to appear on his upcoming EP release, Waterfall, in early 2014.

That’s just about as exciting as the incredible line up for the Evian Christ-curated Trance Party, on at  Corsica Studios this Friday, November 22, featuring a dream line-up including Holy Other, Jam City, Arca, Vessel and Wanda Group.

See the Resident Advisor website for tickets. **

TRACK LISTING

1. Salt Carousel
2. Propeller
3. Fuck Idol
4. Waterfall

FKA Twigs – ‘Papi Pacify’

16 September 2013

Two of the more intriguing, elusive and thus exciting artists to really rise this year, FKA Twigs (nee just ‘Twigs’) and Arca present another excellent video to follow last month’s ‘Water Me‘, an uncanny valley contribution from director, designer and animator Jesse Kanda. This time it’s photographer and film maker Tom Beard working with the Gloucestershire artist’s vision on ‘Papi Pacify’, in anticipation of her EP2 release out tomorrow, September 17, on Young Turks.

This video features imagery that complements the heavy-physicality-meets-the-‘feminine’-ephemeral that FKA Twigs’ trip hop roots, morphed and mingled with Arca’s bass undertow creates, in generating a sublime and sensual whole. **
