Exhibition #1.1 @ Chalet Society – Paris
18/10/2012 @ 11:00 am - 16/12/2012 @ 8:00 pm
freeEverything, all over again. After transforming London in a big white & red circus arena showcasing all sorts of “unusual” amateur art and many many bizarreness the MOE (which we’ve been following since its Primrose Hill edition) comes to Paris after its summer Russian tour…
And what can we expect in this “Exhibition 1.1”? Something Parisians will love as this sort of “spontaneous” act of uniqueness showcasing is not very common in the French capital, usually not very welcoming to new proposals. So when we found out the Chalet Society (a new art space helmed by Marc-Olivier Wahler, former director of Palais de Tokyo) had decided to bring the sweet candy MOE always is, we couldn’t but rejoice & recommend…
Opened last week with FIAC & Slick during the Paris art week Exhibition #1.1 proposes more than 500 self-taught artworks and objects, curated within the narrow corridors and silent classrooms of a 1,000m2 former Catholic seminary in the heart of St Germain ( @ 14 boulevard Raspail), well hidden and not expected apart from the little panel by the door.
“An alternative history of 19th, 20th and 21st Century art” embracing artists who function without art education, theory or society and incorporating essays by leading artists, curators, writers and thinkers, including David Byrne, Ed Ruscha, Marlene Dumas, Carsten Höller, Maurizio Cattelan, Nick Cave, Annette Messager, John Baldessari, Paula Rego and Christian Boltanski.
Unfortunately the MOE Paris edition isn’t open everyday but only from Wed to Sunday 1111:30am to 20:00pm and although they say that it’s “by invitation only” (something you can get pretty much automatically when filling in your e-mail and details in this page) anyone is obviously welcome and the lady will kindly ask you for your 5€-min donation (something we humbly don’t agree with as the spirit of MOE has always been “free or donation”). More info on their page.
