Le fils du roi @ Martel

27 January 2013

One of our quickies for this week in Paris… Appeared last October on the always great independent Belgian comic house FRMK (or Frémok), “Le fils du roi”, Éric Lambé’s latest comic did not only got a warm critic welcome but it now even has its own exhibition @ Galerie Martel.

10 years in the making “the King’s son” is a black&blue-ballpen on white card piece of art, conceived more as a book of images than a comic. A “world book” as described by the author himself which brings us into Éric’s own universe and unconscious state of mind, a world that took many years to come to life as he couldn’t find the appropriate medium nor the tools to give that depth of light and freedom of expression he was after.

The exhibition will run until February 23d, and it’s a great occasion to discover the works of this Belgian master whose works can be seen on FRMK’s website. A must-visit, and as an extra down below, the first part of a French interview from his past exhibition @  Brüsel.

Duplicity

26 January 2013

Penumbear creator team Taco Graveyard have been quite busy lately, extremely busy with their release, but they have enough talent and will to find the time and ideas to develop other titles in parallel. Enough time for Salvatore to submit their mutiplayer “Duplicity” to KS & Ouya’s extremely short game jam which ended last Wednesday.

“Duplicity” is pretty much a 2-player horizontal tetris fight. Both player use their pieces to clean their lines as on the traditional game (in a horizontal way) while at the same time generating an extra row on the adversary’s screen. You obviously loose when you’ve run out of room.

Now that it’s entered Ouya’s “Create” competition we hope it will make it to the final round (February 11th) and then maybe… grab one of those great $$ prizes to develop the game… community support is important pipol… so sharing is caring.

I’m not playing

25 January 2013

Next week, there’s a pretty good reason to be in Berlin, Transmediale will be taking place throughout the whole week (and we’ll be there to cover it of course), at the same time CTM Fest runs a parallel program. But then… there’s all these small events happening here and there, like Marco Mendeni‘s “I’m not playing” on Tuesday @ Altes Finanzamat.

I’m not playing” is Mendeni’s latest collaborative piece with musician Bob Meanza and the also musician and founding-member of Altes Finanzamt Filipe Dias De; an audiovisual performance for hacked videogame and real-time sampler which sits perfectly within the transmedia context the German capital will experiment next week.

Animated Berlinale Shorts

22 January 2013

Today we learned that Simon’s TPB AFK will be premiering at next month’s Berlinale,  but we liked just as much the idea of having 4 animated competing films fighting in the Festival’s shorts competition.  With them, another 23 films will be competing for the Golden Bear and Silver Bear Jury Prize (both of which are presented at the Award Ceremony), the DAAD Short Film Award, and a short film nomination for the European Film Prize.

4 great pieces which include German directors Merlin Flügel (with his short Echo) and Xenia Lesniewski (with Hypozentrum) as well as Korean director Joung Yu Mi (with Love Games) and Nordic Ewa Einhorn & Jeuno JE Kim (with Whale Women).

(Xenia’s Remisequenz from 2011)

To be fair selection amongst these 4 is pretty though already so imaging having to compete with another 23… the full list of short films this way.

Christian Delécluse’s Inner Space

21 January 2013

One of our quickies… and this is a highly recommended one for next Thursday & Friday @ the nearly-Parisian digital arts venue Le Cube.

For a couple of days Christian Delécluse’s installation “Inner Space” will be hosted at one of Le Cube’s many rooms willing to challenge us on the process of how we build our perceptions, for that matter he’s built this ever-changing space within a spacious 12 squared meter – room.

This expert of controversial sensitive experiences will be presenting the new version of his work (presented last year @ Montreal’s BIAN & co-produced by Arcadi & Le Cube) which proposes a beam-lights installation that may generate a hypnotic trance…. an uncertain experience that will be presented by the artist himself this Thursday @ 19h. More info of the event this way.

Nature Trips

20 January 2013

Our favorite Filipino of the moment is on his way to release more material next month… his new album “Hearing Colors” which comes as the perfect equilibrium between eyedress and skint eastwood‘s talents. 15 tracks of delicate dark bits and seducing vocals which got new clip and a couple of soundcloud uploads this week….

Hearing colors will be getting a limited vinyl edition of 300 copies and is being released via beko & Phantasma disques February 18th although pre-orders are already possible for those of you willing to grab Idris’ new astral synth experiments (no artists’ comparisons needed, E&SE are attractive enough on their own).

19 January 2013

If you didn’t manage to go to Young Father’s Tape One London re-release party last Thursday…. well… you still have the chance to grab a bus or a train and get to Glasgow tonight for a free YF show @ Broadcast.

After signing with Anticon last Sept. and doing the “dutty dance” and the Sister video,  the Endinburgh-based trio have been preparing the re-release of their much acclaimed EP and limited 500-copy vinyl edition with a new official release date… next Tuesday. Let’s forget the countless releases of this work and focus on their magic mix. More info this way.

Gonzai hits the kiosques

19 January 2013

It’s good to see that one of our favorite cultural French websites “Gonzai” risking a digital-only strategy and try luck in the traditional press business, maybe because digital-only isn’t that sane? (especially after the unexpected news of Owni’s closure last month)..

Gonzai cover

Afteir their successful Ulule crowdfunding campaign which finished last month, the Paris party people publication are releasing their beloved first child this month (7€). It seems that Frenchies are getting used to (and loving) this kind of pop & investigation literature that Gonzai are willing to push even further each couple of months… “des faits, des freaks et du fun”.

Gonzai sommaire
Gonzai sommaire

Unfortunately the mag won’t be available @ your local “kiosque” (our title is misleading yes) but they’re pretty much going for a crowdfunding-only strategy… so they only publish if their bi-monthly campaign is successful, and only those who’ve supported it will be getting their numbers…. new rules?  (well, they’re actually printing a few extra more to buy on their website).

In this first number they’re going for a few nice articles…. a 16-page dossier on the French “American-dream”, an incredible story by Muppet Show father Jim Henson or an interview with photography director Benoit Debie. We would say… this is a good start. More info this way.

The Man

16 January 2013

Defining virility, manliness or boldness cannot be that simple, even if you take all the (often-misused) most-visible attributes of a man. Shoemaker apprentices and occasional djs “Mercury” keep trying luck at defining such complicated concept with this clip to the single «Man» (taken out of their 2-track EP on Gomma).

Bulgarian contemporary dancer Krassen Krastev is willing to defy all masculinity stereotype with his little dance… because it’s a man’s world and only brave men dance hard.

London Art Fair 2013

15 January 2013

Not every contemporary art fair can celebrate a 25th anniversary, well… a few can, but not in London. And as the London Art Fair marks quarter of a century it also becomes bolder (100 UK and international galleries for the Main Fair) and younger (30 non-established galleries within the Art Projects section).

For this year we get the Main Fair (including galleries such as Pertwee, Anderson & Gold, Jack Bell Gallery….), the Art Projects section which will feature London’s emerging contemporary artists (and this year they welcome an exciting one: the Artist-Led Initiatives Support Network (A.L.I.S.N)); and last but not least… the photographic themed showcase this year curated by Nick Hackworth, Director of Paradise Row.

Sir Peter Blake - London- River Thames Regatta (2012 - Paul Stolper Gallery)

And to top-up the visit…. there’s that extensive programme of talks, debates, daily tours… etc. The bad thing: £16 for a day pass, the good thing… established artists and a lot of new talent, talent, talent. More info this way.

A MAZE opens submissions for Indie games award

14 January 2013

We’re still 3+ months away from this year’s A MAZE festival but someone has to win the new edition of one of the biggest indie gaming European events right? So even if last December the doors opened for a few hours, it is officially tomorrow that the submission period for the 2013 contest begins.

Much like last year A MAZE. will award the “Most Amazing Indie Game 2013” during the DGT – Deutsche Gamestage which will take place in Berlin April 24-26, 2013. Prize and conditions stay very much the same… 5000€ cash prize, and also the 45€ submission fee; and as many of you are aware, last year’s winner Ed Key highlighted some important issues that took place with the organisation and the prize giving.

As Ed points out you should approach your candidacy (if you finally decide to submit your game) as if “you’re paying the entry fee for a cool, passionate, creativity-oriented festival with a great atmosphere“. Whatever comes on top of that it’s a bonus.

A Maze award (photo by Jens Keiner)

There is truly a need for a European large representative festival like A MAZE., a referent in the local scene which includes all the positives (and some of the negatives) this type of event usually comes with, and if the organisation keep finetuning their set of conferences, workshops, exhibitions… etc with an immaculate developer-relationship then we’re pretty convinced things will continue to move forward.

As for this year’s edition…. the deadline for submissions is March 1st, then the ten finalists will be announced April 1, 2013. A month and a half left to submit ladies & gentlemen! Get your consolidated playgrounds ready! More info this way.

Voodoo

12 January 2013

With a dark and somehow magic underground toying atmosphere we instantly thought “Amanita!”. Voodoo’s trailer certainly looks, at first sight, to be taking the direction of new point & click adventures with extremely rich & detailed backgrounds with a heavy baroque touch.

It’s not Amanita’s new adventure but the first production from Seville-based gaming studio Ayramen (aka Abraham Rojo, Flavio Díaz y Miguel García) who’ve decided to develop their first p&c title for release later this year (initially iOS-only).

“Player must help the doll to solve puzzles and riddles to move through the different levels, avoiding deadly dangers”, an apparently simple task & description for what it looks like a great proposal for this 2013, more info and stills on their page.

TPB AFK Official Trailer

11 January 2013

Well well… that 2 year old project that once grabbed twice the amount of $£€ they asked for is ready for a mainstream release… and we are ready for a good dose of Pirate Bay geeky addiction.

While a final release date hasn’t been announced yet Simon Klose & co are pointing at a Spring date (SXSW maybe?)… which means we’ll have to wait for at least another couple of months until the documentary is available on-line; but if we’ve all been patient for a couple of years… another couple of months doesn’t look like much to us does it?

Attention

8 January 2013

French label and lo-fi refuge Almost Musique released Younolovebunny‘s debut cassette “Happy Nation II”  on New Year’s Day, and to spice things up Claus Frøhlich’s new clip for “Attention” got its own vintage mix using edited footage from 1986 Danish film Drømme Computere (Dream Computers).

From being selected by Fat Cat Records for one of their annual demo track compilations a couple of years ago, Claus’s music paranoia is grabbing headlines all over the blogosphere since last November his 5-track digital EP selection was made available for streaming. The good thing is that there is a full 14-track “Happy Nation II” cassette available too (which includes 9 cassette-only songs + 30-minutes of lo-fi music on the B-side (Doh Merry Long Ago Lost Songs)). Rich & eclectic, the whole thing this way.

Kentucky Route Zero, Act I released

7 January 2013

Without any fanfare at all Cardboard Computer’s priceless Kentucky Route Zero just appeared on its website. Jake Elliott & Tamas Kemenczy’s sexiest title to date is now available to buy for Mac or Windows ($7 Act I or $25 for all 5) with the promise for a Linux release very soon.

KRZ still from the game (Act I)
KRZ still from the game (Act I, Scene I)

We’ve obviously already got our own copy of the first act which promises to be a visual delight for avid readers. If a couple of weeks ago Jake was giving us a few tips on his theatrical piece, we have to say KRZ will surely win a much bigger audience than his previous titles who despite the quality of the poetry sometimes lacked an always needed and visually compelling distinctive graphic element.

With the close collaboration of Tamas, Jake proposes once again to choose your own conversational path in a world filled with angular views, unexpected situations and an extremely rich story. Hopefully the next few Acts won’t appear too late this year. More info and trailer on KRZ’s website.

Finnish Comics Annual

7 January 2013

And like each year the Finnish Comics Society are ready to release their Finnish comics Annual which each January presents some of the most beautiful creations of the Finnish “bd”. Maybe not as well-known as the Franco-Belgian, Spanish or Brit EU comics the Finnish scene is characterized by the strong predominance of women authors (Moomin’s author Tove Jansson being probably the most famous), and for the past couple of decades the 9th art has gained a lot of traction in this Scandinavian country.

The 3rd edition of the FCA is edited by the FCS and the French version is published by Rackham (more info on their website) this year (Huuda Huuda have traditionally published the English version, the first 2 are available on their website).

So this year we’ll get some previously unpublished pieces of young (and also not-so-young) authors and Finnish illustrators providing with a great picture of the current Finnish creative scene… including artists such as Mari Ahokoivu, Maria Björklund, Terhi Ekebom, Annukka Leppänen or Hanneriina Moisseinen. Here’s a teaser…

44th and Landis Performance

5 January 2013

Transmedia artist and big lover of toy music boxes, turntables and other nice plasticy things Margaret Noble recently uploaded on-line a few visual elements of her latest performance @ The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego…. “44th and Landis“, a mix between a 19th century storyteller and a modern electronica live performance…

Described as a highly gestural performance which “creates an experimental narrative that blurs the lines between two critical time periods: the 1980s urban culture and the Victorian era”, Margaret keeps mixing, like in many of her previous works, our childhood most beloved toys and many other found objects together with her own synths for another trip into fantasia.
