“Is relaxation just the reproduction of labour power?” Simulations of happiness in RELAXATION ROOM at Kassel’s Stellwerk

, 29 August 2017

The RELAXATION ROOM program of exhibitions was on at Kassel’s Stellwerk, running August 10 to 12.

Part of the Membrane Project at documenta 14, the event featured a series of works across disciplines in music, video and participatory performance, including BBB_, Miriam J. Carranza, Lisa Dreykluft, Lotte Meret Effinger and Jacob Höfle.

Organized by Carranza, the pieces explore what it means to practice (self-)care, asking questions like, “Are sleeping visitors in an exhibition disregarding the art, or is this act of self-care the political use of agency? In an exhibition designed as a place to sleep, do visitors remain consumers when using the facility? Is relaxation just the reproduction of labour power?”

The multi-media project moves between the facets of relaxation; of intimacy, of boredom, of consumerism, as political and recreational. What is the price of being healthy?**
