The two-person show is part of an ongoing collaboration that began between artist Erlanger and architect Govela after publishing book Hate Suburbia via Portland’s Publication Studio on the architectural history of the garage, and was put on in conjunction with the publication launch.

From the topic of Apple’s first computer, to a hit track by Gwen Stefani, Hate Suburbia explores what Bianca Heuser describes in the accompanying text as “a striking causality between the garage’s various usages over time, a loop in which conservatism and counterculture continuously feed back into one another.” From hetero-patriarchy, to tech-nerds, to blank spaces for creative endeavours, the project and exhibition explores politics of the garage.**

Luis Ortega Govela + Olivia Erlanger’s a. or fifty thousand exhibition was on at New York’s 83 Pitt Street, running January 29 to February 23, 2017.
