63rd–77th STEPS is bringing artist Ilya Smirnov‘s project, titled Mechanics Alley, to its Bari, Italy, location, opening December 18 and running to January 31, 2015.
Smirnov’s latest is an electronic book that incorporates a new sequence of text, drawings, video recordings and photographs into one in-depth location study on the Mechanics Alley Manhattan neighbourhood.
The neighbourhood stretches between Henry Street just east of Market Street and runs two blocks southeast to Monroe. It disappeared from city maps after the Manhattan Bridge was constructed almost directly above it in 1095.
