Internet-and-beyond artist Petra Cortright is coming to Berlin’s Société with a solo show titled Petwelt, running from October 9 to November 22.
Those born when we were (because Cortright and I were born in the exact same year, ’86) feel like the last of the Mohicans, the remaining few that grew up with the Internet but can still remember a time you did school assignments by reading Encyclopedias and waited for the screech of the dial-up to assault your ears before you could chat with your friends online.
Cortright’s surveillance-laden, virtual living-inspired art is a kind of ‘voice of a generation’ in that sense, which maybe explains why she’s skyrocketed to popularity so quickly, going from a Frieze showcase in October of last year, to her first solo show, ✖✗✘ BLank BLANk bLANk •・∘, at LA’s Steve Turner Contemporary the following month, to a group show at London’s ICA, a joint show with Ed Fornieles in Paris, and a Mexico-City/Arcadia Missa collaborative group exhibition all before the halfway mark in 2014, as well as an upcoming design collaboration with Stella McCartney.
