Jennifer Chan and Alma Allora have made a cross-continental music video for ‘FALSE IMPRESSION’ as Alpha Girls.
Sprung from the “inter-cultural friendship facilitated by the internet” with Chicago-based Chan and Berlin-based Alloro, the consciously corny ‘FALSE IMPRESSION’ follows hollow simulation drumbeats and hand clap samples through this hymn of mass trash culture and alienation.
That’s over crudely collaged imagery of Chan’s instagram-enabled food obsession, men pole-dancing, people making out, a blue finger-nailed hand stroking a cat and a 1-minute-plus sequence of Chan laughing a lot.
There’s also an inclusive “Gamma Boys” reference which could either be a nudge to gender binaries but is perhaps a playful nod to the Alpha Gamma Delta “fraternity for women” of Syracuse University where Chan completed a Masters. Either way and in the words of the video itself, “HOW THE FUCK DID I END UP HERE???”
