Thomas Hirschhorn @ La Casa Encendida

, 8 October 2009

A mannequin riddled with thousands of screws is at the same time impressive, scary and powerful. This is the main art-piece from Thomasr Hirschhorn‘s (Berna 1957) exhibition “The Subjecters” which starts today at the Casa Encendida, Madrid.

Subjecter & The One World

Subjecters is the first individual exhibition for him in Madrid and comes to “comment the world we live in, complex, chaotic, cruel but beautiful and splendid at the same time” says the artist.

Hirschhorn’s works are committed and reflexive with contemporary reality, making use of different disciplines like sculpture, video or installations they’re usually linked to social and political critics.

In his works he uses everyday materials like photocopies, cardboard, scotch tape, plastic bags or in this case several mannequins representing universal situations in a very direct and transgressive way. Those figures with holes represent what he defines as the “universal wound” which he uses to affirm that “I am responsible of each injury I produce anywhere”… we all are.

Apart from “Subjecter” he has also produced another new work for this exhibition … “Tool Vitrine”…

Tool Vitrine

This transgressive nature of his lead him to create Albinet’s Precarious Museum in a Paris suburb. Run by local residents, it displayed a selection of modern masters borrowed from the prestigious collection housed at the Pompidou (with original works by Duchamp or Warhol) under a poor and prefabricated roof.

He is a bizarre case in modern art. Maybe too coherent, his works aren’t conceived for the market but this one has accepted him pretty well.

If you live or pass by Madrid go and have a look… until January 5th.
